DAVO Congress 10.-12.9.2026 at LMU Munich

This is the online platform for the submission of contributions and registration for the 32nd Congress of the German Middle East Studies Association (DAVO). The submission period has closed, and all submissions have been reviewed by independent reviewers. In mid-May, participants will receive an email notification informing them whether their submission has been accepted.

Across 46 parallel panels, more than 150 presenters will address some of today’s most pressing challenges, including transnational Arab and Turkish nationalism and state-based nationalisms; state responses to opposition movements, religious and linguistic minorities, and refugees; and the ways in which states and other actors respond to global power structures. Additional presentations will explore modern literature, law, and the historical roots of contemporary conflicts, with particular attention to the Ottoman period. As in previous years, DAVO especially welcomes presentations by doctoral researchers. The association will once again award the DAVO Dissertation Prize, worth a total of €3,000.

Scholars researching the Middle East are increasingly coming under attack. This issue will be the focus of the keynote lecture on Thursday afternoon by Prof. Dr. Abdel Razzaq Takriti (Rice University). The topic will also be discussed on Friday evening by representatives of the scholarly associations from France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland.

Registration for the DAVO Congress will be possible from 18 May 2026. Conference fees are as follows and include lunch on September 11 and 12, as well as coffee breaks throughout the conference:

Participants presenting a paper must confirm their congress participation by registering no later than 7 June 2026. Only then will their contribution be included in the programme.
