The green metropolis is looking forward to you

With a green space share of 34%, Wuppertal can rightly call itself a "green metropolis". The city area includes five large parks that invite you to relax and enjoy nature.

The Green Zoo Wuppertal

The Green Zoo Wuppertal is one of the oldest and most traditional zoos in Germany. Situated on a hillside, the zoo is characterized by wide meadows, large ponds and an old stock of trees. It is one of the most scenic facilities of its kind. The spacious animal enclosures and modern buildings are pleasantly integrated into the existing landscape. Thanks to some outstanding investments and new buildings, especially in recent years, the Green Zoo Wuppertal is now one of the most modern animal facilities in Europe.

The Hardt

This oldest park in the city of Wuppertal presents itself magnificently: up to ninety meters above the level of the Wupper, yet only a twenty-minute walk from the center of Elberfeld. With a dense network of paths and extensive meadows, flowerbeds, monuments and a variety of facilities, the Hardt attracts its visitors to the green heights. With its 57 hectares, the Hardt landscape park offers plenty of space for walking, sunbathing and relaxing. The Hardt is one of the oldest city parks in Germany. In 1807 the first areas were laid out. In 1880, Heinrich Siesmeyer, a well-known Prussian horticultural director at the time, was involved in the development of the Hardt. Today it is part of the European Garden Network EGHN and the "Road of Garden Art between Rhine and Meuse". In the botanical garden at the Elisenturm with its adjoining greenhouses, you can view native and exotic plants and attend a regular program of events.

The Barmer Grounds

With an area of 100 hectares, the Barmer Grounds are not only the largest landscape park in Wuppertal, but also the second largest private park in Germany - and yet they are open to the public. Responsible for and in possession of a large part of the area has been the Barmer beautification association for more than 150 years. In addition to the extensive planting, the Vorwerk Park and the Toelle Tower are also an absolute highlight. The Barmer grounds are also part of the 55-park "Road of Garden Art between the Rhine and Meuse".

Nordpark

The Skywalk in the Nordpark, on the northern heights of the district of Barmen, offers a great view over the city. Since 1895, the Nordstadt civic association has taken care of the 39-hectare landscape park, which offers many opportunities to relax with its tree population, fallow deer enclosure and children's playgrounds.

More than 100 coniferous and deciduous tree species can be found in the Burgholz State Forest Arboretum, located in the south of Wuppertal on the border with Solingen and beyond. The Burgholz Forest Education Center (WPZ) offers a diverse program for children and adults who want to learn about the forest. In addition to growing wood, the arboretum offers an exciting 540-hectare recreational area.
